To be assessed, an individual must be registered with an Accredited Training Organization (ATO) or an Approved Centre. The institution will make the necessary arrangements to have the assessments conducted. A registered assessor contracted by the ATO or the NCTVET will conduct the assessments.

Assessments can be facilitated through various assessment pathways. Assessment pathways relate to the various assessment contexts through which competencies can be assessed or measured. For example:

  • On-the-Job
  • Institutional
  • Challenge Testing
  • Certification of Prior Learning (CPL)
  • On-the-Job and Institutional

Learners/Clients are assessed against prescribed Competency Standards. Assessment confirms if an individual can perform to the standards that are expected in the workplace. Various assessment methods can be used, for example:

  • Observation of work tasks
  • Oral questioning and interviews
  • Written Assessment
  • Role plays/Simulations
  • Recognition of prior learning
  • Peer and management feedback on performance

The assessments can either be done in particular units, cluster of units or in all units within a qualification plan.
